In the scene, three witches tell Macbeth that he is the thane of Glamis, he will be the thane of Cawdor and the king Scotland. Later in the scene, Rosse and Angus give him the title ‘thane of Cawdor’ so Macbeth believes that the witches are telling the truth. Macbeth is now torn with the idea that he will be king because in order for him to be king the king has to die and even thinking about that is treason. After contemplating the prophecy he says “If chance will have me king, why, Chance may crown me, Without my stir.” this is saying that if the prophecy is true he will become king without doing anything. Although, subconsciously he will either do less or more things to make sure the prophecy comes true.
